The Greek island of Alonissos is a great destination for your next holiday or vacation. The island can be found in the Aegean Sea, east of mainland Greece. Alonissos is one of the less visited islands of the Sporades Islands, making it more laid-back and tranquil than its island neighbours. The island is the perfect getaway if you’re looking for a break from your hectic lifestyle. Alonissos boasts that it has resisted the invasion of the large tour industry and prides itself on its tranquillity and easy way of life. Even though this may be the case, there is still plenty to see and do when you go on a holiday to Alonissos.
National Marine Park of Alonissos: the marine park is the first one of its kind founded in Greece. The park is divided into zones that have specifically permitted activities. In the various zones you can hike, swim, camp and observe the marine and other wildlife natural to the area. Be sure to wear a good pair of hiking shoes or sandals as the land is fairly rocky.
Museum of Alonissos: the museum was built in a traditional style, made of large stones and wooden doors. The ground and first floors were designed to look like the inside of a traditional Alonissos home and is where the exhibits are housed. Attached to the rear wall of the museum is an impressive war memorial. Visiting the museum will give you an idea of the lives of the people and culture of the island.
Scuba Diving: diving is a favourite activity on the island due to the beautiful underwater scenery. Greece’s seabed has one of the most densely populated areas of shipwrecks in the world. Some of these wrecks date as far back as the 5th century B.C. If you’ve never been on a dive before there is no need to worry. The three diving centres on the island each offer instruction and introductory dives as well as PADI certificates. Alonissos offers the perfect diving opportunities for the novice as well as the experienced diver.
Hiking: there is perhaps no better way to explore a new city or country than on foot. Walking around the old town of Alonissos will transport you back to old Greece as very little has changed. Walk through the pine forests, the neighbourhoods and even caves and you will leave feeling as though you truly visited the island. The people of the island are welcoming and friendly towards visitors.
Swimming: although the island is not known for its sandy beaches, it still offers some of the best swimming opportunities anywhere. With its clear, temperate waters, those seeking a bit of sun and surf will truly appreciate the unique, rocky beaches of Alonissos.
Fishing: if you’ve ever had thoughts of spear-gun fishing, head to the shore and talk with one of the local fisherman. Most are more than willing to take tourists on fishing excursions or give you advice on the best fishing locations on the island. You’ve not really fished until you’ve done so on Alonissos.
